Olympiacos left "Roazhon Park" with an important point, drawing 0-0 with Rennes in the 4th matchday of the Europa League League Phase.
Olympiacos left "Roazhon Park" with an important point, drawing 0-0 with Rennes in the 4th matchday of the Europa League League Phase. The "red and whites" maintained their European unbeaten run and took another significant step towards qualification.
Imanol Alguacil's team showed a mature performance, had control and most of the chances, mainly in the first half, but failed to convert their superiority into goals. On the other hand, Ortega made crucial saves and kept his goal intact.
Started strong but didn't find the goal
Olympiacos threatened from the first minute, when Fortounis crossed and Gonzalez sent his header wide. The biggest chance for the Piraeus side came in the 9th minute, with Puerta shooting from an acute angle and Samba saving, before the ball hit the post and went out for a corner.
The "red and whites" continued to have possession and win the ball high up the pitch. Fortounis, Bailey, and Puerta created some more good opportunities, but without finding the back of the net.
Rennes increased their performance after the first twenty minutes and threatened in the 30th minute, with Ortega saving Al Taamari's powerful shot. In the 43rd minute, the ball ended up in Olympiacos' net from Bruno, but the own goal was disallowed after VAR intervention for offside at the start of the phase.
Substitutions gave new impetus
In the second half, the pace dropped, with Alguacil bringing Gelson Martins and Yaremchuk into the game. The two players gave more energy to the attack, with the Portuguese threatening with a header in the 68th minute and the Ukrainian sending the ball just wide two minutes later.
The game remained open until the end. In the 90th minute, Gelson failed to beat Samba, while a minute later Ortega made the save of the match from Rongier's powerful shot, maintaining the 0-0 scoreline.
Unbeaten and with an eye on the top eight
With the draw in France, Olympiacos reached 10 points with a record of three wins and one draw in the first four matchdays. At the same time, they took a decisive step towards their presence in the top 24 and remain strongly in contention for a place in the top eight, which leads directly to the last 16.
The 0-0 draw ended Olympiacos' run of nine consecutive wins in all competitions, but without changing their positive image and momentum.
The derby with PAOK follows
The Piraeus side now turn their attention to the big game against PAOK, which will take place on Sunday (08/11, 21:00) at "G. Karaiskakis" for the 10th matchday of the Stoiximan Super League.
Olympiacos' next European commitment is scheduled for November 26, when they will host Milan in Faliro for the 5th matchday of the Europa League League Phase.
