Olympiacos swapped one Spanish coach for another

Greek giant Olympiacos announced the departure of head coach José Luis Mendilibar, who will be replaced by Imanol Alguacil. Mendilibar spent just over two years in charge of the club, but his exit came after a 1-1 draw against Volos this past weekend — the team's first slip-up after three rounds of the domestic league. Before that, there had already been disappointment following the club's elimination in Champions League qualifying against Dutch side NEC Nijmegen.

During his time at Olympiacos, the 65-year-old Spaniard won four trophies: the domestic league title, the Cup, the Super Cup, and the Conference League title in 2024. He will be replaced by fellow countryman Imanol Alguacil, 55, whose coaching career began in Real Sociedad's youth academy back in 2011, working his way up through every level of the Basque club. Between 2018 and 2025, he led the first team, winning a Copa del Rey along the way. In his most recent campaign, he worked in Saudi football, where he managed just six wins in 24 matches.
